Giovanna Rosa Galloro Bretti

Giovanna Rosa Galloro Bretti

May 12, 1934 - November 6, 2020

Giovanna Rosa (Galloro) Bretti departed this earth peacefully on Nov. 6, 2020 following a courageous and long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Giovanna Rosa left behind her beloved spouse of over 58 years, Saverio Bretti. She was a loving and dedicated mother to Maria Teresa (Giuseppe Cutrone) and Franca.  Doting grandmother to Valerie and Michael Cutrone. Devoted sister to Salvatore (Egidia), Antonio (Giuseppina) and Angela Cina (Nicola).  Cherished sister-in-law to Concetta Mazzotta, Veronica (Giacomo) Monterosso and Agostina Gugliotta. Unforgettable aunt to many nieces and nephews in Canada and around the world.

Giovanna Rosa was born and raised in San Nicola da Crissa. She was proud of her Italian roots and continued many of her home country’s traditions to the delight of her family and friends.  She arrived in Montreal in October 1953 at the tender age of 19 and loved to recount her adventure during her 13-day ocean crossing on the Conte Biancamano and 2-day train ride to Montreal. She was fiercely proud of her adopted homeland, Canada.

Hard working and family oriented, Giovanna Rosa always cared for those that mattered most to her.  She dedicated her life to family and friends, supporting all those who needed a kind word or a prayer of hope.  Her hugs were legendary, and no one could resist her gentle smile or her fresh tomato sauce.

She faced her illness with courage and grace, never complaining or asking, ‘why me?’.  Her faith was strong, sustaining her throughout her life and especially during difficult times. She had an optimistic spirit and saw the good in everyone.

Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and health care staff that affectionately cared for her at Hôpital Maisonneuve Rosemont, Marina Inc., Force Medic, Société de soins palliatifs à domicile du Grand Montreal, Soins Palliatifs – Pavillion Rosemont.

Her family would like to thank her many friends and neighbours on Marcel Gelinas who brought her much joy when as a community they made tomato sauce, sausages, celebrated milestones or played rounds of 500.

She was a blessing to her family, friends, church and community and will be deeply missed.

Due to the pandemic restrictions, the Funeral Mass will be by invitation only.
